How to Write Resume Bullet Points That Get Interviews (25+ Examples)
July 23, 2026 · 9 min read
Recruiters spend 6–8 seconds on a first resume scan, and ATS software ranks you by keywords before that scan even happens. Your bullet points have to work for both audiences at once: machine-searchable keywords plus human-readable impact. Here's the formula, and 25+ real before/after rewrites.
The Formula: Action Verb + Task + Keyword + Measurable Result
Weak bullets describe duties ('Responsible for social media'). Strong bullets prove outcomes ('Grew Instagram engagement 45% in 6 months by launching a UGC campaign'). The pattern that consistently works:
The pattern
[Strong verb] + [what you did, with the job description's keyword] + [quantified outcome]. Example: 'Reduced (verb) AWS infrastructure costs (keyword) by 32% (result) by rightsizing EC2 instances and adding autoscaling policies.'
Rule 1: Start With a Strong, Varied Action Verb
Never start with 'Responsible for', 'Helped with', 'Worked on', or 'Assisted in'. Pick precise verbs and don't repeat the same one twice in a role:
- Built / results: Launched, Shipped, Built, Delivered, Implemented, Automated
- Improved things: Reduced, Increased, Accelerated, Streamlined, Optimized, Cut
- Led people: Led, Mentored, Coordinated, Directed, Trained, Onboarded
- Analysis: Analyzed, Identified, Forecasted, Modeled, Audited, Diagnosed
Rule 2: Quantify Everything You Can
Numbers stop the eye and prove scale. If you don't have exact figures, use honest estimates ('~200 tickets/month', 'a 6-person team', '$1M+ pipeline'). Quantify: money saved/earned, time reduced, percentage improvements, team sizes, user counts, volumes handled.
Rule 3: Weave In the Job Description's Keywords
ATS scoring matches your bullets against the posting. If the job wants 'stakeholder management', your bullet should say 'stakeholder', not 'worked with different departments'. One keyword per bullet, placed naturally — never a keyword list disguised as a sentence.

The 5 Mistakes That Undo Good Bullets
- First-person pronouns ('I built...') — resumes are written in implied first person, no 'I' needed.
- Duty-speak ('Responsible for...') — describe achievements, not job descriptions.
- Paragraph bullets — keep each to 1–2 lines; recruiters skim, not read.
- Burying the result at the end of a long clause — front-load the impact when it's impressive.
- The same verb four times in a row — 'Led... Led... Led...' reads like a template.
